A South Terrebonne student and football player has died after an automobile crash earlier last weekend on the Bourg-Larose Highway.

Gators junior Andraye Verdin was pronounced dead late last night after the vehicle he was a passenger in lost control and crashed on Sunday, because of wet conditions on the road.

Andraye was a football player for South Terrebonne – a young man that coaches said was coming into his own, both on the field and off.

They remember the young man for his athletic ability and ability to smile in every situation.

“He was a great kid,” said Ellender coach Dave McCormick, who worked with Verdin last year when he was an assistant coach at South Terrebonne. “Everyone loved him. For this to happen, it’s tragic. I’m praying for his family. I’m praying for his friends. He was always laughing. He was always smiling. He always had the way to laugh and also to make you laugh. He was just one of those kids. He will be sorely missed.”

“He was a gifted young man,” South Terrebonne head football coach Richard Curlin added. “He was very, very athletic. The kids liked him. He was a good friend to many of the guys on our team. He was going to have a big year for us. We’re all just hurt and are missing him right now.”

According to Louisiana State Police Troop C, the crash occurred on Sunday – the final day before school started in Terrebonne Parish.

According to the Louisiana State Police Troop C, Andraye was the passenger in a 2002 Toyota Tundra on the Lafourche Parish side of the Bourg-Larose Highway on Sunday when the vehicle failed to navigate a left curve and veered off the road.

The report says the road was wet, which caused the driver to lose control and spin counter-clockwise into a tree on the passenger side.

The Grand Bois native and South Terrebonne junior had been undergoing treatment for the past several days following the incident. He was pronounced dead late last night.

Curlin said the accident is a big blow to the South Terrebonne community and the entire athletic community in the Houma-Thibodaux area.

On both Facebook and Twitter, countless posts show support to Andraye over the past several days.

“Stay strong dude,” read one tweet from Spencer Dupre.

“I’m praying for you,” read another from Jordan Guidry.

Andraye was a two-ways player for South Terrebonne, who was expected to see the field a lot on the varsity level in 2016.

Curlin said the team plans to honor Andraye’s memory throughout the season.

“He was just starting to get his stride. He was just starting to get his confidence,” Curlin said. “This was going to be the most that he’d played for us in his career. It’s such a shame and is just so sad that it was all taken away.”

“It’s a terrible, terrible story,” McCormick added. “He was a wonderful kid.”
