The Southland Hogs are getting closer to earning a ring.
The Hogs sit roughly two and a half wins from the American Legion Louisiana State Championship, being played on the campus of Delgado Community College.
The Hogs are one of a couple teams still alive in the event. The reason they’re “two and a half” wins away from the title is because they currently lead Retif Oil (Jesuit) 10-1 in the top of the sixth inning in a game that was suspended because of bad weather.
That game will resume at 3:30 p.m. today.
Assuming the Hogs hang on to their lofty advantage, they would then move on to play tomorrow and would need two wins to earn the title. First pitch for those games tomorrow would be at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.
The opponents for the potential games tomorrow are not yet determined, pending other results that will happen today.
“The guys have really pulled together,” Southland Hogs coach and CCA baseball coach Joe Teuton said. “When you’re pulling kids from the local area, it makes it really easy to coach. Everyone is all-in right now, for the most part. Our guys are going all-in to try and win that ring.”
Teuton said the Hogs have had one heck of a State Tournament.
Earlier in the event, they eliminated Gauthier Amedee, the defending State Champions.
And against Retif Oil, the Hogs have used balance throughout their batting order to surge way out in front. Austin Labit worked the first 5 innings on the mound, limiting the opponent and keeping his offense at the plate.
Teuton said he’s confident that his team can win two ballgames tomorrow, assuming they get by today.
The coach said he has his pitching lined up with Blake Ougel slated to start on full rest. The team also has Zach Templet ready and available.
“We’re going to piece it together one pitcher at a time, one inning at a time,” Teuton said. “But if we get through the first one, we’re confident, we can win the second one.”
Teuton said the support the Hogs have been given throughout the event is amazing, adding that his phone has been flooding with text messages and voice messages from local fans and Hogs alumni who want the team to do well.
Should Southland win the ballgame with Jesuit today, Teuton said he believes there will be a lot of local flavor at Delgado tomorrow.
“I think it’s going to be a packed house,” he said. “And I think most of them will be rooting for us.”
If the Hogs win the State Tournament, they qualify for the American Legion Southeast Regional Tournament from Aug. 7-11 in Tampa.
