One of the area’s best girls’ basketball players is going to be sidelined indefinitely after sustaining a knee injury.

South Lafourche post player Victorianna Nelson missed Tuesday’s district game against South Terrebonne after sustaining an injury during the weekend at the Sugar Bowl Classic at the Alario Center.

Nelson, a junior, is one of the best girls’ basketball players in the Houma-Thibodaux area – a player who was likely to get All-State consideration before the injury.

Lady Tarpons coach Rainie Terrebonne confirmed the injury, but said there is no timetable for a recovery, because doctors are still conducting tests on Nelson’s knee to see if there is any ligament damage.

Nelson attended Tuesday’s game, but was on crutches.

“It’s all just sort of day-to-day right now,” Terrebonne said. “I wish I had a better answer, and we’d all like to know, but we just don’t know the extent of the injury.”

Nelson’s absence will be hurtful to South Lafourche – a team that is currently 20-2 and is ranked as the No. 3 team in Louisiana in Class 4A.

The Lady Tarpons survived their first test without Nelson, defeating South Terrebonne by 11 on Tuesday night.

But South Lafourche struggled to replace Nelson’s rebounding throughout the game.

“It will just be a total team effort,” Terrebonne said. “No one is going to replace her on their own. Everyone just sort of has to find a way to step up.”

The Lady Tarpons return to the floor tonight at Morgan City.
