Several locals advanced in the opening round of the prep volleyball state playoffs.

But the challenge now is to push past some of the best teams in Louisiana in Round 2 to continue the march toward a state championship.

As of press-time on late Monday afternoon, a total of seven local schools (H.L. Bourgeois, Central Lafourche, South Terrebonne, Terrebonne, E.D. White, Vandebilt and Houma Christian) were still competing in the postseason, which will play out over the next two weeks throughout Louisiana.

But all seven schools faced stiff competition in the second round on Monday night.

No scores for those matches were available at the time this edition was printed.

But all scores will be available online on Tuesday at our website HoumaTimes.com. We will also post updates on Facebook.

DIVISION I

In the state’s largest classification, H.L. Bourgeois is again holding strong.

The Lady Braves rolled through the regular season with 24 wins, which earned the team the No. 12 seed in the playoffs. In Round 1, H.L. Bourgeois faced a familiar foe – in-district rival Hahnville.

Much like the team’s two meetings in the regular season, H.L. Bourgeois’ powerful, dynamic offense was too much for the Lady Tigers, who succumbed to a 25-18, 25-17, 25-13 victory at the Lady Braves gym.

As has been the case all season for H.L. Bourgeois, the offense was balanced with Christina McElroy (13 kills), Diavonie Gasery (six kills) and Chloe Ryder (two aces and 32 assists) pitching in on the action.

“We played with a lot of energy,” H.L. Bourgeois coach Peter Verret said. “It was a total team effort.”

With the win, H.L. Bourgeois moved to the second round where they faced No. 5 St. Amant – a team who earned a first-round bye.

The winner of that game will move on to the State Tournament at the Pontchartrain Center.

DIVISION II

While H.L. Bourgeois is our lone competitor in Division I, we have a slew of locals still in play for the Division II crown.

No. 16 Central Lafourche survived the opening round, trumping No. 17 Edna Karr in a straight-sets win (25-14, 25-21, 25-17). The Lady Trojans’ next test was arguably the stiffest in all of Louisiana – a Monday afternoon battle with No. 1 St. Thomas More.

St. Thomas More is a wrecking ball that’s done serious damage to opponents throughout the season.

They’re 40-1 and have only lost a handful of sets throughout the year.

On the opposite end of the bracket, No. 9 South Terrebonne also moved on in decisive fashion, soundly beating No. 24 Riverdale in straight sets (25-10, 25-12, 25-7). The Lady Gators faced No. 8 Academy of Our Lake on Monday.

Across the bracket, No. 10 Terrebonne ran wild against Ellender last week, sounding trumping the No. 23 Lady Patriots in three sets (25-19, 25-13, 25-9). With the win, the Lady Tigers traveled to face No. 7 Cabrini in the second round.

South Lafourche also made the Division II Playoffs – the school’s first-ever volleyball postseason berth. But the Lady Tarpons fell to Live Oak in the opening round.

DIVISION III

In the Division III bracket, E.D. White and Vandebilt are still alive, which comes as no surprise to locals, as both programs are annual powers.

E.D. White scored the No. 11 seed and beat No. 22 Springfield in the opening round (25-15, 25-7, 26-24). With the win, the Lady Cardinals traveled and took on No. 6 St. Michael on Monday night.

Vandebilt didn’t compete in the opening round, earning a first-round bye with the No. 7-seed.

They took on No. 10 St. Louis at home on Monday. St. Louis trumped Plaquemine in straight sets in the opening round.

DIVISION V

In Division V, the story is almost the same as in Division III.

No. 5 Houma Christian cruised to a first-round bye after a dominant regular season. After watching the opening round from home, the Lady Warriors hosted No. 12 Lafayette Christian on Monday. •
