LADY TERRIERS ROLLING

The Vandebilt Catholic girls’ soccer team continues to roll toward the playoffs.

The Lady Terriers scored a big, 1-0, win last week against Destrehan, collecting valuable power points the team will use for seeding in their hunt for the state title.

Against the Wildcats, Julianna Deblieux scored the only goal of the match, putting the ball into the back of the net in the first half to beat the tough Lady Wildcats defense.

From there, Vandebilt’s defense did the rest, keeping the Lady Terriers in possession of the ball, which allowed the team the opportunity to preserve the lead and seal the victory.

Goalie Emma Guidry was on point throughout the match, sending away all of Destrehan’s scoring opportunities in the victory.

With the win, Vandebilt is now 10-2-2 on the season.

They are widely expected to be one of the top teams in the State Championship race.

The Lady Terriers are the reigning Division III State Champions, and they return several key players off that title-winning team.

The team will return to the pitch this week at the Mandeville High School Tournament where they’ll be pit against some of the top teams in Louisiana.

After that, the team will return back to district play, where the Lady Terriers already won a 2-0 record.

TARPONS HEAD TO E.D. WHITE

WITH MOMENTUM

Last year, Bogalusa mauled the South Lafourche boys’ basketball team, using pressure defense and fast-paced offense to storm to an 83-64 victory.

But the Tarpons worked hard this past week to make sure that wouldn’t happen again.

The Tarpons avenged last year’s blemish on Wednesday night in Galliano, slowing the tempo and scoring a 53-45 victory over the Lumberjacks.

Senior guard Seth Borne led all scorers with 24 points in the win. Junior forward Luke Chiasson and junior guard Marquis Francis were also key, pitching in 12 points and 10 points, respectively.

With the victory, the Tarpons improved to 5-7 on the season.

They will return to action this weekend at the E.D. White Tournament – an event which will feature local teams, including host E.D. White, H.L. Bourgeois, South Terrebonne, Central Lafourche and the Tarpons.

5A, 4A DISTRICTS HONOR

FOOTBALL STANDOUTS

Several area football players were named to All-District teams this week, capping off successful 2016 seasons.

Defensively, Thibodaux had four First-Team All-District members, including linebacker Derrick Sullivan and defensive backs Tyler Brown, Seth Boudreaux and Dwayne Coleman.

Terrebonne defensive back Anthony Rufin also made the First Team.

In District 7-4A, local winners are abundant, and Ellender standout Davontavean Martin was named the District’s Offensive MVP.

On the defensive side, the late Louis Blanchard was named Defensive MVP for the third-straight season.

Blanchard passed away in late-November after a severe neck injury.

CARDINALS EARN BIG WIN

The E.D. White basketball team will soon share a district with Vandebilt in all major sports.

While waiting, the Cardinals got a big-time win over their rivals on the basketball hardwood.

E.D. White beat the Terriers 60-37 this past week, thanks to 28 points from Nicholls commitment Kevin Johnson – one of the top players in the area.

The Cardinals paid tribute to their 2006-07 Class 3A State Runner-Up team in the game, which was never in question. The Cardinals led by 16 at halftime and by as much as 20 in the third quarter before sealing the deal.
