Celebration in the Oaks

Through Jan. 3

The holiday tradition continues as hundreds of thousands of twinkling lights and light displays surround the beautiful trees, gardens and features of New Orleans’ City Park.

The event is fun for all ages and has become a yearly gathering for many families both local and afar.

Favorites include the two-mile train ride through gorgeous light exhibits, the animated “Cajun Night Before Christmas” display, and of course New Orleans’ iconic snowman Br. Bingle.

Celebration in the Oaks runs through Jan. 3 with the exception of being closed Dec. 1-4, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

In order to avoid long wait times, tickets can be purchased online at neworleanscitypark.com.

A Christmas Carol

Through Dec. 11-14, 18-21

Who doesn’t want to have a little fun during the holiday season?

Well, a trip to the Southern Rep Theatre will provide just that.

Local favorite John “Spud” McConnell stars as the iconic Scrooge in the classic Charles Dickens tale A Christmas Carol adapted by Doris Baizley.

The cheerful and witty production features music, dance and clowns.

Tickets for adults are $25, and $12.50 for children and can be purchased online at southernrep.com. The production runs in a preview capacity Dec. 3-5 and in an official capacity Dec. 6-7,11-14 and 18-21. Start times are 3 p.m. on Sundays and 8 p.m. on other days.

Running of the Santas

Dec. 13

One of the best parts of New Orleans is you never know what you’re going to see on any given day in the CBD.

Nothing surprises you.

So when you see hundreds, and possibly thousands, of people dressed up as Santa Claus, Mrs .Claus, Scooge, Jingle Bells, Jack Frost, Old Man Winter and many other characters associated with the season, don’t worry – Christmas isn’t coming a week and a half early.

It’s all part of the fourth annual Running of the Santas Sunday, Dec. 13

The event begins at 3 p.m. at the Barcadia Bar (aka the “South Pole”) with food, holiday drinks and entertainment, and it ends at 6 p.m. at Generations Hall (aka the “North Pole”).

Big Sam’s Funky Nation and Category 6 will provide entertainment all night long, and of course, someone will be crowned with the “Best Holiday Costume” award.

Tickets are available at www.runningofthesantas.com and are $15 for general admission and $75 for VIP. Tickets include an open bar at Generations Hall from 6:30 to 10 p.m.

Carolina in Jackson Square

Dec. 21

The near 60-year tradition continues in the Quarter at 7 p.m. as residents and tourists join to sing carols by candlelight.

The free event is sponsored by Patio Planters of the Vieux Carre and typically attracts hundreds of people steps away from historic St. Louis Cathedral. Song sheets and candles are provided.

The Jackson Square gates open at 6:30 p.m., and caroling begins promptly at 7 p.m.

Whether it’s enjoying the displays at “Celebration in the Oaks” or the singing at “Caroling in Jackson Square,” there are plenty of options in South Louisiana to get in the holiday spirit.
