Over the past 64 years, Terrebonne General Medical Center has grown to become one of the leading healthcare facilities in the state, while also receiving national recognition, through its expansion of its medical staff, application of innovative technologies, partnerships with other healthcare leaders, significant outreach in the community and more.

TGMC continues meet the healthcare needs of the community by increasing its medical staff that already covers an impressive wide range of specialties. In recent years, the facility added ten new doctors, whose extensive specialties include pediatrics, plastic surgery, internal medicine, endocrinology and neurology, just to name a few. Five of the ten added physicians are also Houma natives, as Terrebonne General is proud to bring these physicians back home while also appreciating the other excellent physicians brought in from beyond the area. The hospital strives to offer enough services so their patients never have to travel to another location.

“Terrebonne General is looking at those physicians that not only provide acute care practice, but also those clinic type of services to help keep people well and healthy,” said Phyllis Peoples, President and CEO of TGMC. “Our goal is to always provide a full complement of all services…We are the largest and most comprehensive healthcare facility in the region.”

Their commitment to being the largest, most comprehensive facility in the region is shown through their over 300 physicians, 1400 total employees (which puts them in the top three of employers for Terrebonne Parish) and 321 beds.

The facility is embracing the future by incorporating new healthcare technologies and services that provide better healing processes for their patients. The Mary Bird Perkins TGMC Cancer Center is the only facility in the region that started utilizing SpaceOAR hydrogel—the innovative technology that gives prostate cancer patients a more comfortable and effective treatment.

“Terrebonne General’s philosophy, along with our board and our leadership, is always to stay ahead and to offer the most innovative technology…We want to be on the leading edge of health care for our region, not just our community,” Peoples said.

Their leadership is felt throughout the community as their facility is the only in the region to provide a number of specific services. Through their partnership with Cardiovascular Institute of the South, they are applying cardiac ablations for irregular heartbeat. They also perform complex cardiovascular procedures—such as valve replacement and abdominal aneurysm stenting—through their Hybrid OR.

In fact, their cardiology department garnered the attention of CareChex, who ranked TGMC in the top 10 percent in the nation for Cardiac Care for Patient Safety and for Interventional Cardiology for Patient Safety. Terrebonne General is also the first in the state to receive the American College of Cardiology award—which gave the facility a Gold status based on its metrics and accomplishments.

“All of those awards are credentials that take a lot team work with our staff and our physicians to assure that we get those notorieties so that our community can understand that we have the Gold Seal of Approval,” Peoples acknowledged.

Other notable accomplishments include their advanced Wound Healing Center that is adding hyperbarics later this year, the Women’s Health Center that is the only facility in the region to have a Level 3 NICU and their completion of over 45 innovative clinical trials.

While their facility has the official Gold approval, their community service has also reached that same level of commitment. TGMC is an advocate for early cancer detection. In 2017, they held 40 “Early Bird” screening events, which navigated 84 people due to abnormal findings, seven of whom were diagnosed with cancer. Their annual Ladies Night Out fundraiser has raised over $1 million since its inaugural year 12 years ago in which just 100 people attended the fundraiser. Today, the well-established event brings in over 1,000 attendees and raised close to $130,000 for the Cancer Center this year—and still counting.

“All of that money goes back into our community for the ‘Early Bird’ screening,” Peoples said. “We’re very proud of our advocacy with cancer and definitely have committed a lot of resources and time to assure our cancer programs here are strong.”

Like their impactful outreach, Terrebonne General Medical Center is also proud of being a legacy organization.

“We have a lot of people who not only they work here, but their parents have worked here and now we’re seeing the third generation,” Peoples said. “People who work here are historically from the region and stay a very long time, and that says a lot for us…We definitely support our culture.”
