Local business owner David Blythe knew he had to make a move.

Knowing he wouldn’t be happy ‘working for the man,’ he decided to work for himself.

Blythe Computer Solutions was born.

With a one-month anniversary coming soon, the Houma-based computer repair shop is excited to grow into its St. Charles Street location.

“It’s taking us a little while to get onto our feet – but that’s to be expected,” Blythe said. “We don’t have our sign yet. My business cards have been slow getting here. But we are excited about everything that we’re doing. We’re waiting for the line of people to pile up and come to our door. … We think we’re going to succeed and do really well.”

Blythe has 15 years of experience in the computer game – he knows the ins and outs of Windows machines.

He also knows a thing or two about Apples, too, saying that his office doesn’t turn down any customer in need of a fix.

“I know more about Windows,” Blythe said. “But we don’t tell them to go home if they have a Mac.”

But throughout the duration of his time learning computer work, Blythe was working for his father.

He was the office manager for local oral surgeon Dr. David Blythe Jr.

“I was his office guy and his IT manager,” the younger Blythe said. “I took care of those things for his business.”

But with the father heading toward retirement age, Blythe said he knew he had to do something to launch himself into his own independent career path.

That’s when he started working on Blythe Computer Solutions and moved into his office space – located across the street from Southdown Elementary.

“He is getting closer to retiring, and I just knew that I wouldn’t be happy working for anyone else,” Blythe said. “So I needed to do something that would allow me to work for myself.”

Blythe and his lone employee Derrick Holladay said they take pride in being able to handle “almost anything” thrown their way.

Blythe Computer Solutions prefers that users bring their equipment into the shop for a professional look.

But if dealing with a business, the owner said he or Holladay may be able to travel to accommodate the customer.

The company handles basic computer tech work, removes viruses, does networking and can also do website design – among other things.

“We really can do just about anything, pretty much,” Holladay said. “We can do all of the components of a computer shop.”

So far with a month under their belts, Blythe said the most common problem his business sees is a “slow computer.”

Sometimes, the computer is slow because it has been infected with a virus.

Other times, it may be lagging because of other ailments like an overload of unused and unneeded software – among other things.

Blythe said he had basic advice for anyone at home on how to keep your computer purring through the Internet without a hitch.

“I think people need to be very careful about where they go in the Internet,” Blythe said. “I think they should also be very careful about the attachments they download in emails and everything like that. Also, these ‘Click here and win money,’ gimmicks – you’d probably want to think twice before clicking those.”

But in addition to informing customers, Blythe said he also understands that he has to be patient.

Being able to work with people is a big factor in the business moving.

“Being patient is really important,” Blythe said. “That’s a big part of the job. We can’t assume that someone knows how to do something.

Right now, the office is bare. No sign hangs over the building.

But give it time. Blythe believes things will grow in no time.

“We’re excited,” Blythe said. “It’s been a little slow, but we knew it would be at first. Once we get going, it’ll be a lot of fun.”

Computer repairman and business owner David Blythe works on a machine at his shop on St. Charles Street. Open for approximately a month, Blythe Computer Solutions prides itself on being a quality stop for anyone with computer needs.
