The Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center is poised and ready to celebrate its 20th anniversary with director Dean Schouest at the helm. The Civic Center provides Terrebonne Parish with exciting events such as Broadway and Disney productions, indoor and outdoor concerts and festivals, sporting events, consumer events, and serves as host to conventions, banquets, wedding receptions and more. Dean has hit the ground running as Director and has already welcomed multiple large-scale productions to the floor of the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center. It is through his ingenuity and under his guidance that the Civic Center emerges on top for its 20th year.
What led you to the role you currently hold in your company?
“I believe what led me to my role is my passion for community involvement and event promotion, all done on a volunteer basis. My efforts were noticed by some very influential people in the community, which led to me getting the offer and opportunity to direct the Civic Center with the same passion.”
What is the biggest challenge you have faced over the years and how did you meet it?
“My biggest challenge in my years of promoting events and fundraisers was getting the support and belief of the whole community to follow and be a part of everything I was involved in. I met the challenge by being an open book and showing the community the heart and honesty I possessed in everything I did with the financial end of things so they knew their support and belief could be fully trusted.”
What is on the horizon for you?
“My horizon is bright, starting with our Anniversary Celebration on January 6, 2019 to show the community the new and improved Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center and our efforts to bring weekly events to the community.”
What piece of advice do you share with your employees/coworkers regularly?
“Come to work every day with the energy that makes your job so fun that you won’t consider it work. I have an open door policy based on the saying ‘Leaders who don’t listen will eventually be surrounded by people who have nothing to say.’”
Who are your greatest influencers? How do you feel knowing that others list you as theirs?
“My greatest influencer was my dad Gerald Schouest who has passed away now, but in his years he pushed for and fought for coastal restoration for Terrebonne by serving on multiple boards and organizations that worked diligently to improve our coast. I feel I have taken his love for Terrebonne and just used it in my own direction in keeping Terrebonne beautiful.If others consider me as an influencer then I am very humbled by it and it would make me smile to know possibly someone out there is saying, ‘Because of you I followed my passion and dreams and never gave up.’”•
