Which chicken sandwich do you prefer?
The debate has raged on social media.
“I know food,” Houma native Russ Billiot says with a laugh before pointing to his belly. “I have 34 years experience.”
Billiot was one of 11 locals The Times called on to answer a heated social media debate regarding who is the chain store king of the chicken sandwich.
For years, Chick-fil-A was considered the champ, but now, they have competition from Popeyes, who recently released their own offering onto the market — a sandwich that’s been hard to find because it’s being cooked and sold as soon as it comes off the truck.
It’s a bit of a hung jury. Six picked Chick-fil-A and five picked Popeyes. All 11 said both sandwiches are very good.
“You can’t go wrong,” said Houma woman Renee Morris, who voted Popeyes. “I think Popeyes has a little bit more flavor. But if you offered me either, I’d be smiling.”
The competition was awfully close.
Billiot was a Popeyes voter, but his friend, Houma native Chris Williams was not.
They disagreed on the topic because Billiot said the Popeyes sandwich was more “juicy”, but Williams said that just meant it was greasier, adding that Chick-fil-A’s offering was cooked perfectly.
“The Popeyes sandwich is good, but it’s a mess,” Williams said. “There’s only one king. Chick-fil-A is the king.”
So what say you? Who of the two franchise stores do you think is the chicken sandwich king?
