WITH ITS WELLNESS CENTER EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS & A NEW, BIGGER CANCER CENTER COMING, THE HOSPITAL IS RAISING THE BAR

The beat just keeps drumming on and on for Thibodaux Regional Medical Center.

Two years ago, its state-of-the-art Wellness Center opened its doors. At press-time, the facility had exceeded expectations, generating 5,300 memberships, while housing more than 500,000 total visits.

Now, they’re lifting the bar even higher.

The hospital announced plans for a new, innovative Cancer Center, which is currently being designed and which is slated to open in late-2020.

Thibodaux Regional CEO Greg Stock said the hospital and its staff work tirelessly to continue to do more for the people of our community.

He said the recent successes of Thibodaux Regional show that the right team is in place and that things are going in the right direction.

“We live for that patient-centered excellence,” Stock said. “We want to excel at that whole patient-centered experience. We have won awards and people have come back and told us how much they’ve appreciated the care our doctors, nurses and staff have given them. To us, there’s no higher compliment or better feeling in the world. That’s just the greatest feeling in the world.”

The Wellness Center is single-handedly changing lives for locals — one day at a time.

Stock said there have been 350,000 total visits in the fitness center section of the Wellness Center, adding that those numbers far exceed anything that was anticipated when the building first opened its doors nearly two years ago.

Stock said the stories are inspiring and motivating — tales of people who have used the building to literally grab their lives back from obesity, diabetes or other ailments.

“It’s so encouraging,” Stock said. “There are people who have lost 115 pounds or 150 pounds in some cases. There are some who have lost just 20 pounds, but their blood pressure has gone down and they’re off their medications. There are people who are walking three miles a week who could hardly walk across the room. There are people who are walking across the room who couldn’t get out of bed. It’s just amazing. The Wellness Center is giving people their lives back. It’s the greatest thing to see.”

The new Cancer Center hopes to do a lot of those same things.

Stock said Thibodaux Regional has been a leader in local cancer care for many years, but the hospital identified a need to do more for the patients who are in need.

“We saw a need to create a bigger and better environment,” Stock said.

The new facility will encompass just under 100,000 square feet of real estate and will have five stories. It will supplant the hospital’s current Cancer Center, which Stock said has been award-winning, but which could be bigger and more innovative.

Stock said it will have all of the best technologies in the ever-changing world of medicine. But it will also be focused heavily on the patient with spacier rooms, comforting tones and everything the patient needs to overcome their tough time and come out to the other side better than ever.

“We know that there are people who seek treatment at facilities out of state and we want people to know that we understand the decisions that people have to make,” Stock said. “But we also want them to know that our commitment is to the best care for patients. There are a lot of things that go into cancer care and a lot of people are affected — the patient, their families and it’s a a life-changing experience for everyone. Our Cancer Center will have the latest technologies and we will do our best to make sure that this difficult time is as manageable as it can be for those who are in need.”

Thibodaux Regional Hospital Board Chairman Jake Giardina said the facility will fill a huge need in the community, citing cancer statistics locally — numbers that are higher than national averages.

“We have a cancer center that has been in existence for quite some time and it is not serving the public in the way we know the public needs to be served in this area,” Giardina said. “Everything is changing. We did those other buildings, I think, in the 1990s. The equipment, just everything is changing, it has changed quite a bit. We want to be able to serve the people of this community to the very best of our economic means.”

But perhaps the best thing about Thibodaux Regional’s surge of momentum is how they’re doing it.

Thibodaux Regional Medical Center is self-sustaining and they’ve been so for more than 25 years — something that Stock said is a great credit to the hospital’s board, which has “gone the extra mile” to put Thibodaux Regional in a place to enjoy sustained success.

In addition to that, the hospital is also a huge economic engine locally. Stock said Thibodaux Regional has an always-growing staff of doctors and each of those doctors have their own staffs, as well. In addition to that, the hospital has nurses, secretaries, cafeteria workers and custodians to fill out their multi-million dollar payroll.

These expansion projects are often done by local contractors, too, which brings the economic engine full-circle.

“The facilities and buildings and all of those great things help inject dollars into the local economy,” Stock said. “We’re very proud of that.”

in addition to expansions, the CEO said Thibodaux Regional is aggressively researching and investing in technology, adding that it’s a constant grind with an ever-changing field.

“We’re always looking for things that can help us get better,” Stock said. “The industry is never stagnant, but neither are we. We want to always invest in ways to be more innovative and successful.”
