A Houma organization dedicated to cultivating women’s activity in business is hosting its luncheon next week.

The Women’s Business Alliance’s luncheon starts at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday at The Main Affair in Houma. Dr. Laynie Barrilleaux, who has served as assistant and interim vice president of academic affairs at Nicholls State University, is set to be the speaker at the event.

WBA Chairwoman Brenda Leroux Babin said Barrilleaux’s address to the WBA will focus on conducting an effective meeting. Babin said her idea of an effective meeting centers on a goal-oriented gathering.

“A productive meeting would be effective to me. Because too often we meet just for the sake of meeting, and nothing gets accomplished,” Babin said.

The WBA has been around since the early aughts and hosts a luncheon about every other week, according to Babin. The entity started out as a branch of the Houma-Terrebonne Chamber of Commerce before growing into its own organization. Though a local entity, it has national and international connections, including awarding an ATHENA Award each year, which honors a man or woman who helps women attain professional excellence and leadership skills.

Babin said the WBA serves as an important incubator for female business engagement in the Houma, particularly in a state where company leadership can skew heavily male.

“I think because Louisiana, where we fall as far as the ratio of women to men in the business world, I think having the WBA offers that support to allow more women to become involved in the business community,” Babin said.

She’s going to be speaking on how to conduct effective meetings. Registration for the event can be completed online at wbahouma.org. Sponsorship opportunities are available at meetings so employers can promote their local businesses.
