Three men were cited by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries on July 24 for fishing oysters out of a polluted area in Lafourche Parish.

Agents were called to complaints of illegal oyster harvesting in the Bayou Blue area.

Agents responded to the scene and located three men – Frank Anthony Fernandez, 28, Marvin Misael Amaya-Castro, 30, and Darvin Medina Roches, 36, taking oysters out of an unapproved polluted area east of Bayou Blue.

Fernandez and Amaya-Castro are from Gretna, Roches is from New Orleans.

Responding agents seized 40 sacks of oysters and returned them to the water.

LDWF warns that taking oysters from polluted areas brings a $900-$950 fine and up to 120 days in jail.

The men cited could also have their oyster harvester license revoked by LDWF for up to a year.

The violators may also be sentenced to perform community service and may be only allowed to harvest oysters from a vessel that is equipped with a vessel monitoring device for up to a year.
