Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agents arrested a Jeanerette subject for alleged crabbing violations on Nov. 20 in St. Mary Parish.


Agents arrested Sung Ly, 60, for using crab traps without required markings, destroying legal crab traps or removing contents from crab traps, theft of crab traps and taking or possessing immature female crabs. Ly was booked into the St. Mary Parish Correctional Facility.

Agents learned that Ly took crab traps from numerous commercial fishermen within the Cote Blanche Bay area without permission and placed them into his crab trap lines. Ly was also observed tending and moving numerous stolen crab traps during the course of the investigation.

Agents seized 24 crates of crabs and returned them to the water. Agents also seized 122 crab traps of which 14 were untagged and 108 belonged to 27 different commercial crab fishermen.


Using crab traps without required markings, theft of crab traps, destroying legal crab traps or removing contents from crab traps brings a $400 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail for each offense. Taking or possessing immature female crabs carries a $100 to $350 fine and up to 60 days in jail.

Agents participating in the case are Lt. Joey Thompson, Sgt. Scott Dupre, Corporal Jake Darden, Senior Agent Bill Carpenter, Senior Agent Gerald Sander, Senior Agent Jeremy Foret, and Senior Agent Christopher Hebert.
