A former Lafourche Parish resident was sentenced to at least 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to first-degree sexual assault of a child.

William Gilliam, 45, of Duenweg, Missouri, was charged and sentenced in connection to an investigation which was headed by Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office detectives.

In 2017, juvenile detectives began an investigation after receiving a complaint about a family member who had been sexually abused by Gilliam over the course of several years.

The initial incident occurred about six years ago in Raceland where Gilliam lived at the time.

Through investigation, detectives learned that Gilliam had inappropriate sexual contact with the victim in Lafourche Parish, but also in other jurisdictions, as well as Lancaster County in Nebraska.

Detectives obtained warrants for Gilliam’s arrest for aggravated incest and sexual battery (forcible fondling). Authorities later learned that he was in custody in Missouri where he faced additional charges.

This week, Gilliam pled guilty to first-degree sexual assault of a child for the charges in Nebraska.

He was sentenced to no less than 40 years in prison and no more than 50 years with a mandatory 15-year minimum.

He still faces charges in Missouri and Louisiana.
