An inmate at the Lafourche Parish Detention Center was pronounced dead at a local hospital earlier this week – the second inmate to die in a little more than a month.

Kevin Percle, 50, of Chackbay, was pronounced dead at a local hospital on Nov. 12, 2018. The death is being investigated by the Catahoula Parish Sheriff’s Office with help from LPSO. Percle spent some time at that parish’s jail. But he died in Lafourche after being transferred here for a court date.

The suspect was moved to the Catahoula Correctional Center on Oct. 21, 2018. During his stay, LPSO has learned that an incident occurred with another inmate in which Percle suffered a blow to the head. But the incident was not reported at that time.

The inmate was moved back to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center on Nov. 4 for a court date and after returning, investigators learned that the incident had taken place.

On Nov. 12, correctional officers found Percle unresponsive with labored breathing. He was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

An autopsy determined cause of death to be a homicide due to trauma to the brain.

The Catahoula Parish Sheriff’s Office is conducting the investigation into the incident involving Percle and LPSO is assisting. The Catahoula Correctional Center is privately operated by Lasalle Corrections.

Percle was arrested on Oct. 9 on active warrants for contempt of court and simple battery. He was facing previous charges of domestic abuse battery. He was moved to Catahoula Parish due to overcrowding in the Lafourche Jail.

Lafourche Parish Government has contracted to house prisoners in other parishes, including Catahoula.
