A Raceland woman is charged with kidnapping after she allegedly took a man’s wallet and told him he wouldn’t get it back until he gave her a ride across town.

Just after 6:30 a.m. on Friday, Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a burglary call at a residence on La. Highway 1 in Raceland.

Through investigation, authorities learned that Charlene Shelby, 56, of Raceland, had arrived at the residence around 30 minutes prior and allegedly forced entry into the residence.

Once inside, the suspect allegedly grabbed a knife, approached the home owner and told him that she would only give the wallet back if he gave her a ride to Brocato Lane in Raceland.

The man took the suspect to Brocato Lane and she gave the wallet back, but the suspect said the money inside was gone.

Deputies made contact with Shelby at her residence and she was arrested.

She was initially taken to a local hospital for treatment for cuts on her arms. Authorities believe she got the injuries breaking glass to force entry into the home.

Shelby is charged with aggravated burglary and second-degree kidnapping.

Bond is set at $75,000.
