Lafourche Parish authorities have arrested two men in the past 48 hours – both charged with repeat-DWI offenses.

Around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, authorities traveling south on La. Highway 308 said they initiated a traffic stop in the Raceland area.

During the stop, they identified the driver as Damond Savoie, 41, of Arnaudville.

Authorities said they noticed signs of impairment from Savoie, which initiated a field sobriety test. During the test, Savoie performed poorly, and afterward, he admitted to smoking marijuana before driving and also having marijuana in his vehicle.

During a search, authorities found a suspected marijuana cigarette, a partially-smoked marijuana cigar and other drug paraphernalia. Authorities said they obtained a blood sample for Savoie after he admitted to smoking, and the results are pending at the Louisiana State Police’s Crime Lab in Baton Rouge.

An investigation into Savoie’s history showed three prior arrests for marijuana possession and DWI.

Savoie was arrested and taken to the Lafourche Parish Jail on charges of DWI (fourth offense), possession of marijuana (third and subsequent offenses) and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also charged with improper lane usage.

His bond is set at $56,100.

About four hours later at 1 a.m. on Thursday morning, authorities patrolling Dantin Street in Raceland said they observed a pickup truck stopped in the opposite lane blocking traffic in the 500 block.

Deputies said they approached the vehicle and found the driver, Carl Chapman, 47, of Des Allemands, asleep in the driver’s seat.

Authorities said they found three open containers of alcoholic beverages near him, and when they awoke the suspect, a strong odor of alcohol was on his person.

Chapman allegedly admitted to drinking alcohol, but refused a field sobriety test and a breath test. Authorities obtained a warrant for a blood test and the results are pending.

Chapman is charged with DWI (third offense), possession of alcoholic beverages in a motor vehicle, driving under suspension and blocking private driveways, highways and public rights-of-way.

His bond is set at $55,200.
