A 59-year-old Montegut man is charged with attempted second-degree murder and hit and run after his alleged role in a shooting on Aug. 9, 2019.

On the above-listed date, the Houma Police Department responded to the 800 block of Park Avenue in reference to a hit and run. The call was around 6 p.m.

During investigation, HPD learned a male was struck with a vehicle driven by Ronald Coffman, 59, of South Louisiana Avenue, Montegut, after a verbal exchange.

As the investigation continued, HPD learned the victim was talking to Coffman, who was sitting in a pickup truck, regarding him being banned from the property.

During the conversation, the victim walked off. Authorities then learned that Coffman began to exit the property, made a turn toward the victim accelerating until he purposely struck him, which caused serious injury.

After striking the victim, Coffman allegedly struck another vehicle parked in the parking lot and then departed the area in an unknown direction.

Later during investigation, HPD learned that the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office located Coffman at a residence in Gibson. He was unconscious and needed serious medical attention, so he was taken to a medical facility for treatment.

During the time he was hospitalized, HPD obtained warrants for Coffman’s arrest on charges of attempted second-degree murder and hit and run.

On Aug. 13, HPD learned that Coffman was being released from medical care. He was then contacted and taken into custody on the charges.
