A Houma man is in custody of the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office after he allegedly led officers on a high-speed pursuit in a stolen vehicle.
All while driving drunk.
At around 12:05 a.m. on Dec. 31, deputies said they observed a vehicle traveling on La. Highway 3185 that passed through a four-way stop at the intersection with Talbot Avenue.
Authorities then observed the vehicle making a left turn on red at St. Mary Street.
Deputies tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver of the vehicle, later identified as Roy Leonard, 40, of Houma, refused to stop.
Leonard continued northbound on St. Mary Street at a high rate of speed before eventually making a U-turn and traveling southbound.
LPSO called for backup and Thibodaux Police and Louisiana State Police Troop C arrived to assist.
Leonard allegedly stopped briefly at the intersection of St. Mary Street and Jackson and officers ordered him to step out of his vehicle.
He ignored and continued on Jackson Street, traveling to Canal Boulevard.
The suspect then continued to Terrebonne Parish where deputies used spike strips to disable his tires. This caused the vehicle to come to a stop on West Main Street where Leonard was taken into custody.
Authorities learned that the vehicle Leonard was driving was stolen and that Leonard had a warrant out for his arrest in Lincoln Parish.
Authorities also located several containers of alcoholic beverages in the car and he was showing signs of intoxication at the time of his arrest.
Leonard refused a sobriety test, but blew above the legal limit on a breath test. Authorities learned that Leonard had also been charged with DWI in 2010.
Leonard was arrested and booked in the Lafourche Parish Detention Center on charges of DWI (second offense), aggravated flight from an officer, illegal possession of stolen things, possession of alcoholic beverages in a motor vehicle, failure to stop at a stop sign and turning left on red.
His bond is set at $113,500 and he’s also being held as a fugitive for Lincoln Parish.
