A 16-year-old Houma teen is in the custody of the Houma Police Department after he shot his girlfriend with a stolen handgun.

The victim in the incident is currently in stable condition at an area hospital.

On Aug. 7 at approximately 10 a.m., HPD was called to Leonard Chabert Medical Center in reference to a 15-year-old female with a gunshot wound to the lower abdomen.

After speaking with the girl, officers learned that she had been shot at Renatta Lakes Apartments on the East Side of Houma.

The victim told authorities that her 16-year-old boyfriend had accidentally shot her while she was at his apartment.

The suspect was then located and taken into custody at the apartment complex.

As the scene was processed, a .40-caliber semi-automatic handgun that had been reported stolen was recovered. The investigation also showed that the suspect accidentally fired the weapon, striking the female as he intentionally discharged the weapon, but did not intend to have anyone in the way of the bullet.

The suspect was booked into the Terrebonne Parish Juvenile Detention Center on charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, obstruction of justice, illegal possession of a stolen firearm, illegal possession of a handgun by a person under 17 and illegal use of a weapon and negligent injuring.

The victim is being treated for her injuries and at the present time is in stable condition.
