A 30-year-old Thibodaux man is accused of severely injuring a small child.

At around 12:30 a.m. on Monday, Lafourche deputies and juvenile detectives responded to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center in reference to a toddler who was unresponsive due to head trauma.

Through investigation, detectives learned that the mother left the child in the care of Rashun Reed, 30, of Thibodaux, on Sunday night while she went into another room.

Reed brought the child back to the mother a few minutes later, and the child was not breathing.

The child was taken to the emergency room at TRMC and later to Children’s Hospital in New Orleans for additional treatment.

The child remains in critical, but stable condition.

Through investigation, detectives learned the child’s injuries were consistent with what happens when a kid is shaken violently.

Authorities questioned Reed about the incident, and he allegedly told detectives that the child started to fuss, so he started to “bounce the child.”

He also admitted to “squeezing the child tightly” in an effort to quiet the child.

Authorities obtained a warrant for Reed’s arrest for second-degree cruelty to a juvenile.

He was arrested and taken to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center.

While at the jail, Reed received additional charges after resisting officers and disobeying commands.

While authorities were escorting Reed, they said they noticed him pick an object from the ground, which was later determined to be a cigarette.

When officers questioned Reed about the object, he tried to consume it. Authorities then grabbed the suspect’s arm, and he resisted violently, allegedly striking an officer in the face and damaging a door in the jail with his foot.

For the incident, Reed is also charged with resisting an officer with force or violence, battery of a police officer and simple criminal damage to property.

His bond is set at $126,000.
