Bayou Grace’s photo project is raising awareness nationwide about the continuing land loss that is changing the shape of Terrebonne Parish and threatening the existence of our coastal communities.

“MAPPING NORTH AMERICA”

May 7-9 and 17-23


A National Geographic giant map of North America offers interactive learning and exploration. The map – 26 feet by 35 feet – comes with a trunk of interactive activities, games, props and educational resources for all ages. Sample activities and lesson plans are available on the National Geographic Web site.

“BEN BEHIND HIS VOICES”

Randye Kaye, author of “Ben Behind His Voices,” shares her experiences as the mother of a son with schizophrenia. A panel of concerned local professionals from key agencies and services will discuss the support available and gaps in service for individuals and families coping with mental health issues.

“A JOURNEY THROUGH THE UNIVERSE: from Earth to the Farthest Galaxies”

Everyone knows their street address, but what about your cosmic address? Just where are we in the grand scheme of things? Reference Librarian Ross Mays, creator of www.universetimelines.com, hosts a discussion of where we are in the solar system, the galaxy and the university. Open to all ages.

The Princeton Review is offering a free full-length ACT practice test for students. All scores will be calculated and test takers can review their scores with a Princeton Review counselor. Registration is required.

“FREE ENGLISH CLASSES”

Beginning May 4

Spanish speakers can learn English over the span of two months. One 3-hour session will be held weekly. Class sizes are limited; registration is required.

“KEN BURNS’ ‘VIETNAM’”

May and June

Ken Burns’ PBS documentary “American Experience: Vietnam” is shown in six parts as part of The Big Read program. Author Tim O’Brien’s “The Things They Carried,” a semi-autobiographical account of an American platoon in Vietnam, was selected as The Big Read’s selection this year.

2 p.m. on May 4, 11, 18 and 25 and 2 p.m. June 8 and 15, Thibodaux Branch

Children, teens and adults can partake in the Summer Reading Program in Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes. With plenty of choices and prizes, the program encourages locals to become familiar with the library and enjoy a good book.
