After a disappointing start to their 2013 campaign, the Cajun Rollergirls went to work during a three-month break in games.

Brittany “Delirium Trigger” Dominique and Hester “Psycho Beast” Haddox, the team’s star and president, respectively, even went beyond the state’s borders in attempts to improve their skills. They didn’t make the 30-woman cut, but Trigger said the experience, along with other offseason workouts, has made the team stronger.

“We did a lot of private skating with our coach, and we also took a lot back from the tryouts,” Trigger said. “Several league members attended, that same weekend, a big tournament in Philadelphia. We watched a lot of high-level derby, took a lot of notes and we’ve been integrating that, along with some good endurance training.”

The roller derby season is comprised of spring and fall schedules. The Rollergirls were 1-4 in the spring, beating the Cenla Derby Dames after losing their first four. To kick off the fall portion, the Rollergirls beat the formidable Mobile Derby Darlings, 11th in the August Derby South rankings.

The win should boost the Rollergirls from their current 18th spot in the rankings. The top 12 Derby South teams are invited to a post-season tournament. That the Rollergirls broke through and garnered that invitation for the first time ever last year makes the early-season slump even more surprising.

“We had a bunch of roster changes,” said Bessy “Jigsaw Youth” Mendoza, in her second season. “After the break we just came off, we were able to rebuild our roster. We had lost a lot of veterans who retired or whose jobs got in the way. … We have a good roster now, so I think it’s going to work, it’s going to be awesome. We’re playing some hard teams, but I think we have it in us to win.”

In addition to a Sept. 14 contest against Red Stick Roller Derby’s “A Team,” (ranked number two in the state, Trigger said) the Rollergirls have two home games remaining this season, one each in October and November. They also travel to New Orleans this month for a bout with the Big Easy Crescent Wenches, ranked seventh in Derby South.

The match against Red Stick begins at 7 p.m., Sept. 14, at Warren Harang Jr. Municipal Auditorium, 310 N. Canal Blvd., Thibodaux. Tickets are $15. For more information, visit www.cajunrollergirls.com.
