Fairgoers help those in need while enjoying food, music and other activities presented by a local service organization.

The T-Caillou Lions Club donates to nursing homes, gives out school supplies and helps with food, medicine and other needs in the community. One of the group’s fundraisers is a fall fair, which has been held for several years, said fair Chairwoman Maranda Trahan. Proceeds benefit the two Lions Club state projects – the Louisiana Lions Camp and the Louisiana Lions Eye Foundation – as well as service programs in the Houma area.

The Louisiana Lions Camp in Anacoco, La., offers free, weeklong summer programs for children and teens within the state who have physical and mental disabilities, diabetes and pulmonary disorders. The Louisiana Lions Eye Foundation provides vision services for residents, helping them receive eye exams, glasses and eye surgeries. Through research and early screenings, the foundation works to cure eye diseases and prevent blindness.

Visitors to the fair need not go hungry while supporting these causes. Traditional items like hamburgers and hot dogs are served in addition to Louisiana favorites such as gumbo, shrimp boulettes, po’boys and shrimp stew. Fairgoers can also choose from a variety of desserts.

The fair has activities for children as well. They fish in a designated area, get their faces painted, play games such as a beanbag toss and enjoy carnival rides. Wristbands for the rides are $20 per session or $50 for the weekend. Sessions are 6-10 p.m., Friday, 1-5 p.m. and 6-10 p.m., Saturday and 1-5 p.m., Sunday.

Fans of swamp pop and Cajun music dance and sing along throughout the weekend. The music starts with Junior LaCrosse and Sumtin’ Sneaky performing from 7-11 p.m., Friday. On Saturday, Tet’ Dur’ plays from 2-6 p.m. and Ryan Foret and Foret Tradition have the stage from 7-11 p.m. Tet Dur returns from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, and Bayou Boys close out the fair with a 5-9 p.m. show.

Fair hours are 5-11 p.m. Friday, noon-11 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call (985) 876-1444.
