It’s easy to overlook HoneyBaked Ham, which is squeezed between a battery store and a cash-advance parlor in a shopping center off Houma’s Martin Luther King Boulevard.

The cramped quarters are conducive to cozy dining, a pleasant experience amplified by the flavorful sandwiches offered as daily lunches.

HoneyBaked Ham, with 400 stores nationwide, is known for selling 10-pound hams, turkey and roast, cooked to order. Open six days a week, however, the dine-in café is an alluring sidebar.

Monday through Saturday, one of the café’s 18 sandwiches is featured as a special. Six sandwiches rotate.

The specials range from $6.29 to $7.29 and come with a free drink. A bag of chips is also included, but that is the case whether the sandwich is the daily feature or not.

On the day my guest and I dine, the “HoneyBaked Turkey” sandwich is the special.

I opt to have it served warm, and the roasted turkey comes dressed with Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, savory sauce and honey mustard and served on a baker’s roll. Sweet and soft, the sandwich is delightful.

The turkey bacon blitz, which my guest ordered off the everyday menu, is also served warm. The size of the sandwich leaves a little to be desired, but the ingredients come fresh and the package is a treat. This was a dish my guest said he’d order again on a return visit.

Of particular pleasure is the savory sauce, which complemented the house honey mustard to add a tangy, sweet touch to the sandwiches’ delicious meats.

In the shop that earned its name by selling full-sized ham, it’s smaller, alternative sandwiches shouldn’t be overlooked.

HoneyBaked Ham’s gems are hidden in this Martin Luther King Boulevard shopping center.
