Along with the 17 decorated floats, the Houma Junior High and Terrebonne and Grand Caillou middle schools’ marching bands are scheduled to make an appearance, as well as A-truck Band.

This year’s special throws include light-up beads and wands, rings, tons of stuffed animals and footballs and soccer balls with the Aquarius crest on them.

The impressive Budweiser Clydesdales are also ready to clomp their way down the route.

The theme is chosen by the krewe president and voted on by a board. Float titles tie into the theme and are selected by the float captains. The riders on each float design and make costumes to represent the title of their float.

There were no female krewes in Houma prior to 1951. That is when several Houma ladies met to explore the idea of organizing a local carnival club. It was February 12, 1951 when the group’s first meeting was held at the Mayfair Club on Houma’s Main Street. Approximately 65 ladies showed up. The purpose of the newly formed ladies’ carnival club was to have as much fun as the guys, promote the carnival spirit and afford the opportunity for any female member, whether married or single, to be queen.

On Thursday, February 21, 1952 at 7 p.m., the first Krewe of Hyacinthians parade rolled. The parade was moved to a Sunday afternoon in 1954, when the ban on Sunday parading was lifted. In 1956, the krewe purchased its own floats.

The parade begins at Southland Mall, rolls down West Park Avenue to Hollywood Road, takes a right then a left to West Main Street where it proceeds to Barrow Street, takes a right and disbands at Town Hall.
