Krewe of Aphrodite

Friday, Feb. 8, 6:30 p.m. (Houma)

The all-female Houma Women’s Carnival Club Inc. Krewe of Aphrodite is celebrating its 30th year with 464 members.

Seventeen throwing floats, plus three non-throwing floats, will reflect the exciting theme, “Laissez les bon Temps Rouler.”

The bands of Terrebonne, Ellender, South Terrebonne and Central Lafourche high schools and Lacache-Montegut Middle School get your fingers snapping and your toes tapping.

Along with traditional Mardi Gras beads, riders toss stuffed animals and specialty items, including 30th anniversary beads.

The 2013 Royal Court is:

Queen Aphrodite XXX Lisa Martin

Maids: Kelly Dupre, Jenita Mai, Jamie Messina, Sarah Simoneaux, Kallie Wurzlow, Terri Wurzlow

Pages: Kailei Marie Bergeron, Victoria Duplantis, Nathaniel Naquin, Laurel Shipp

Sharon Pontiff enters her 10th year as parade captain, and Lisa Qualkenbush is the ball captain.

The club was founded in 1983 by women who are united in promoting civic and social activities during the Mardi Gras season. The krewe gives throughout the year to various charities.

The parade begins at Southland Mall, rolls down West Park Avenue to Hollywood Road, takes a right then a left to West Main Street where it proceeds to Barrow Street, takes a right and disbands at Town Hall.

Krewe of Adonis

Friday, Feb. 8, 7 p.m. (Morgan City)

The all-male Krewe of Adonis will parade for its 38th year down the streets of Morgan City.

The krewe, formed in 1975, consists of 138 members and entertains St. Mary Parish with its only night parade.

Each year the krewe’s captain chooses the theme and costumes. The 2013 theme, “Adonis Conquers Rome,” is sure to thrill.

The specially lit 14-floats are jointly owned by Adonis and another local krewe. Several of the float groups have their own theme bead designed to go with their float theme, as well as other special throws.

Joining Adonis for the festivities are several walking clubs, the Morgan City High School marching band and various local sound systems between each float group – plenty of music to keep your toes tapping.

The 2013 Royal Krewe is:

King Adonis XXXVIII Raymond Pisani

Queen Adonis XXXVIII Christy Dragna

Dukes: Dean Adams, Travis Glynn, Jeffery Lagrange, Rob Radtke

Maids: Carey Gaddis, Tracy Glynn, Amy Lagrange, Joann Radtke

The pages are Nicholas Percle and Sara Radtke.

Keith Leonard is the parade and ball captain and Andrea Dragna is Guard to Captain.

The guest parade marshals are local college football players, including Kenny Hilliard.

The Krewe of Adonis is involved in the local community and holds an annual golf tournament, the proceeds of which are donated to charity.

The parade route is backward from the traditional route this year. It begins at the Morgan City Municipal Auditorium on Myrtle Street, turns left onto Victor II Boulevard their left on Clothilde Street, right on Seventh Street, left on Marguerite Street, where it will stop to do the official toast of royalty at Morgan City Junior High School. It then proceeds to Sixth Street where it takes a right, then a left onto Onstead Street, left onto Federal Avenue and ends under the new bridge.
