Supporters of the movement to beautify downtown Houma can contribute to the cause while enjoying a simmering wintertime treat.

The inaugural Courthouse Chili Cook Off will begin at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28 at the courthouse square in downtown Houma. Wristbands cost $5 per person and permit revelers to sample chili served by every participant.

The event is being held through a partnership of the Downtown Development Corporation and Terrebonne Parish’s Main Street Program. All of the proceeds will go toward the beautification of Main Street.

Ann Picou, manager of the Main Street Program, said she’s hoping to raise about $5,000 through the cook-off. The money will be used implement “Bulb-outs,” she said.

“You add vegetation, you can put benches, things like that to soften the straight cement all over the place,” Picou said. “We’re trying to get more vegetation, trees, things of that nature downtown to soften that sidewalk and make it more welcoming.”

The Main Street Program is accepting applications from people who wish to participate in the cook-off. The cost is $100 per team, and each team is being asked to prepare 50 servings of 4 ounces.
