Ellendale Country Club Golf Course
Located in Terrebonne Parish, Houma’s Ellendale Country Club is considered to be “Golf’s best kept secret in the South.”
That secret has largely been uncovered in recent years as professional tournaments have been waged on the challenging, 7,165-yard, par-72 layout.
A members-only club, Ellendale recently underwent a $2 million renovation, which included tee boxes, fairways and new water features.
Masters’ Champions Craig Stadler and Bubba Watson have played the course in recent years.
Lined with Spanish moss-covered oak trees and Louisiana Cypress, the course is a local favorite because of its rich Louisiana feel.
To play, golfers must have a membership, which cost $173.60 for people 33 years old or younger and $224.60 for all other Terrebonne residents.
Atchafalaya at Idlewild
Just approximately 30-40 miles to the west, St. Mary Parish’s Atchafalaya at Idlewild is also a favorite among locals.
Opened in 2006, the lush par-72 provides a stiff challenge to anyone playing the back tees because of its massive 7,533-yard layout.
Since its inception, Atchafalaya at Idlewild has won no shortage of awards for golfing excellence.
Golf Digest listed the course among America’s best in 2006. Competing magazine Golfweek named Atchafalaya at Idlewild to its “Best Course You Can Play” list in 2009.
To play 18 holes at Atchafalaya from Mon-Thurs, it’s a $58 rate. That number jumps to $68 on weekends.
Discounts are available for twilight players, seniors and juniors.
Cypress Greens
For those looking to polish their game without denting their pockets, a free public course in Donner is also available to local golfers.
Cypress Greens, also known as the “Donner Par 3 Course,” consists of nine par-3 holes. The course is free to the public and anyone of any age can show up and play the course without a tee time.
The course is perfect for the beginning golfer or for a seasoned veteran trying to break in a new set of clubs or knock some rust off his or her swing.
Due to its location – the course is structured around a playground and the Donner Commnity Center – there is an abunadnce of activities for the young ones to partake in while their parents seek the pin.
