CHILDREN’S SUMMER ART CAMP 2012 – Through June


Students in grades 2 through 12 can take weekly classes through the Terrebonne Fine Arts Guild. Topics vary, but may include drawing, watercolor and acrylic painting and clay. A new topic is discussed each day. Morning classes, for second- through fourth-graders, run from 10 a.m. to noon, and evening classes, fifth-graders and older, run from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Registration is $30.

WETLANDS ACADIAN CULTURAL CENTER SUMMER CAMPS – through June 22


The Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center hosts four weeklong summer camps for children between the ages of 6 and 12. Camp programs include outdoor activities, nature crafts, hands-on experiments, music, games and cultural explorations. The remaining camps are scheduled for June 4-8 (ages 6 to 9); June 11-15 (ages 9 to 12); and Junes 18-22 (ages 6 to 9). Registration costs $50 for the 9- to 12-year-olds and $25 for the 6- to 9-year-olds. Spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

“BAYOU CAJUNS” FESTIVAL – June 2


The Cajun French Music Association of Louisiana hosts the Houma festival, which will feature music by Couche Couche and Treater. The festival also includes a cake walk, and food options: jambalaya, chicken and sausage gumbo, white beans and chili Fritos, among others. Admission is $7.

MIGHTY KIDS TRIATHLON – June 3


Children between the ages of 3 and 14 are invited to run, swim and bike in the second-annual Mighty Kids Triathlon. Registration is $25 and closes May 25. Sign-up is on a first-come, first-served basis, and the number of entrants is capped at 200. The race promotes health awareness in children while raising money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

ELLENDALE COUNTRY CLUB GOLF TOURNAMENT – June 4

TRANSIT OF VENUS – June 5


The St. George Observatory opens for viewing the transit of Venus between Earth and the Sun, which won’t happen again until Dec. 10, 2117. Curator Ken Stage conducts experiments for visiting children, including Newton’s Experiment for Light, and plans to build an 8-foot by 8-foot camera obscura. Stage warns that people should not view the transit without a filtered telescope. $9 for students/seniors and $10 for adults.

 Geno Delafose, Grammy-nominated C.J. Chenier and 80-year-old D.L. Menard are among 21 performers gracing three stages at the sixth annual Louisiana Cajun-Zydeco Festival. Presented by the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the two-day event also features 30 regional artisans selling crafts and 15 food vendors. The Bayou Lafourche CCA Chapter holds its annual banquet, which includes a live and silent auctions, raffles, door prizes, dinner and an open bar. LOUISIANA CATFISH FESTIVAL – June 22-24

Catfish lovers unite in Des Allemands for the annual catfish festival, a three-day, 28 and a half-hour celebration. Catfish is offered on platters, po-boys, boulettes and in catfish sauce piquant. Pay-one-price rides, live bands, games, other food booths, a country store, plant booths and crafts booths populate church grounds. On Saturday, the festival features a catfish-eating contest and 5K and one-mile races.
