One of the most famous professional wrestlers in recent years is bringing his tool box of elbow drops, drop kicks and body slams to Houma this month.

Esteemed former WWE star Matt Hardy is going to compete at Elite Championship Wrestling’s first-ever Supershow Event.

The show begins with an opening bell at 5 p.m., Aug. 25 at the East Park Recreation Center in Houma.

The former WWE tag team champion, European champion and United States champion is in the show’s main event, in a title match against Elite Heavyweight Champion Steve Anthony.

If he’s successful, it would be another addition to Hardy’s already-steep trophy case.

“This is going to be our biggest card of the year,” Elite Championship Wrestling Promoter David Pitre Jr. said. “It will feature all of our local stars, as well as international stars like Bestia 666 and Matt Hardy. We are extremely excited to host this match, as it’s going to pit the undisputed best wrestler in Louisiana versus one of the top free agents in the entire United States.”

Matt Hardy has been a name in the world of wrestling for more than 15 years.

The 38-year-old competitor got his start in competition in the early 1990s, competing briefly in WCW and New Frontier Wrestling Association.

Hardy started to surface in 1994 when he signed a contract with the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE).

After a more than three-year run as a sporadic competitor, Hardy and his real-life brother Jeff were given their big break in 1998 when WWF created the Hardy Boyz tag team.

During more than four years as a team, the Hardy Boyz earned a reputation for being one of the most high-flying tag teams in wrestling history.

In their run, the Hardy’s won countless tag team championships. They were annually one of the biggest merchandise draws in the wrestling world.

Throughout the 2000s, Matt Hardy branched out of the tag team world and enjoyed a singles career – a run that saw him win the European Championship and also the United States Championship.

In the late 2000s when WWE purchased Extreme Championship Wrestling, Hardy also became the ECW Heavyweight champion.

Hardy and WWE parted ways in 2010, and since that time, he has been active in the independent circuit. He competes in several organizations across the Southeast and East Coast.

That tour has now taken Hardy to Houma.

At the Elite show in August, the former WWE star will be challenging for the title. But his spot is just one match in a card full of wrestling action.

In addition to Hardy, former WWE competitor Luke Hawx will be competing at the super show in a singles match with Bestia 666.

While Hardy is coming into Elite for the first time, someone will also leave the organization during this night, as John Saxon is scheduled to wrestle either Clarice or Minotaur in a “Loser Leaves Town” match.

That match is exactly as it sounds – the loser will never compete in Elite Championship Wrestling again.

Purple Haze and Matt Riviera are also scheduled to compete on the card, as well as several other Elite Championship Wrestling regulars.

The event begins at 5 p.m., Aug. 25 at East Park Recreation Center, 8533 E. Park Ave., Houma. Tickets range from $12-15. For more information, call (985) 262-9789 or visit www.elitechampionshipwrestling.com.
