TOUR BAYOU LAFOURCHE – Oct. 3 through Dec. 15


Cast off from Thibodaux and take a journey to one of two historic plantation homes adjacent to Bayou Lafourche. On the way, learn about the waterway’s storied history and evolving biology. On Fridays and Saturdays, the 20-passenger aluminum boat travels upstream to Madewood Plantation in Napoleonville; on Wednesdays, the boat docks at E.D. White Plantation Home, birthplace of U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Edward Douglass White. Madewood tickets cost $28.25, which includes lunch. E.D. White tours cost $5. Reservations are required.

GRETNA HERITAGE FESTIVAL – Oct. 5-7


Joe Cocker, The Spinners, Pat Green, Big & Rich, David Allan Coe, Al “Lil Fats” Jackson, Dash Rip Rock and Amanda Shaw & The Cute Guys are among the bands scheduled to perform at the three-day festival. Tickets cost $20 for one day and $50 for the weekend pass at the gate but can be purchased online at a discount.

TOUR DU TECHE III – Oct. 5-7


The 135-mile race along Bayou Teche is back for its third year. More than $20,000 in prize money and dozens of trophies are awarded at the conclusion of the staged marathon. Spectators can indulge in music at various locations along the journey.

KREWE OF TERREANIANS SPORTING CLAYS TOURNAMENT – Oct. 6

SHADOWS ON THE TECHE ARTS AND CRAFTS FAIR – Oct. 6


Approximately 100 vendors from around Louisiana set up shop in the Shadow Gardens to exhibit and sell their all-original work. PROMENADE d’ART de FRANKLIN – Oct. 6 FREE


The City of Franklin Main Street Program hosts the third annual Promenade d’art de Franklin, or the Franklin Art Walk. Local and regional artists submit their original works for competition in the following mediums: drawing, basketry, painting, pottery, recycled art, handmade accessories, mixed media, photography, sculpture and fiber arts. Merchants host art venues along the sidewalks of Main Street. Attendees and artists are asked to wear white linen or white cotton.

LOUISIANA GUMBO FESTIVAL OF CHACKBAY – Oct. 12-14 FREE


“The Gumbo Capitol of Louisiana” hosts its three-day ode to the “Cajun cuisine” with music, dancing, pay-one-price rids, a 5K run/walk on Saturday and fireman’s parade on Sunday. Don Rich closes the festival with a two-hour performance Sunday night.

BRIDGE CITY GUMBO FESTIVAL – Oct. 12-14 FREE


More than 2,000 gallons of seafood and chicken and sausage gumbo is expected to be served over the festival’s three days. Miss Creole Gumbo and her king welcome visitors, and 10 bands take the stage. Craft and non-gumbo food vendors sell their products, but the gumbo-cooking contest is the centerpiece.

FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH PUMPKIN PATCH – Oct. 15-31

First United Methodist Church in Houma hosts its second annual pumpkin patch over 16 days leading to Halloween. Pumpkins are priced according to size, and last year the church sold close to 1,000 pumpkins. Proceeds are divvied among organizations within the church, such as the day school and feed the homeless programs. The patch is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
