It started off as a leisurely canoe trip down the Atchafalaya River.

Today, the Tour du Teche covers 135 miles over three days in three stages with participants in canoes, kayaks and pirogues vying for prizes and bragging rights.

Tour du Teche II, a marathon for the fittest, kicks off Oct. 7 in Port Barre with the Crawfish and the Acadian Trail races. The Crawfish is a 34-mile “sprint” to Breaux Bridge. The Acadian Trail meanwhile is a 48-mile jaunt to St. Martinville.

The next day, the Hot Sauce (25 miles to New Iberia) and Sugar (60 miles to Franklin) races get under way.

The final leg of the Tour II is the Oil & Gas, a 27-mile all-out race to the finish line at the iconic red lighthouse in the city park on the Atchafalaya River in Berwick.

Tour du Teche director Nicole Patin said a night’s party follows every race. The race has been tagged, “C’est pas juste une course” because “it’s not just a race.” It also offers a unique look at the landscape, Cajun culture, food, music and language.
