Search for the ‘Golden Monkey’

A golden monkey is on the loose in Morgan City, and officials are offering a cash prize for its retrieval.

The Cajun Coast Visitors and Convention Bureau, in preparation for the first-ever Tarzan, Lord of the Louisiana Jungle Festival from April 13-14, hid the monkey on public property somewhere in the Morgan City area.

Starting on Monday, Cajun Coast began releasing eight daily clues that hint at the monkey’s location. A cash prize will be given to the person who retrieves the monkey and delivers it to the festival April 14 at the Morgan City Municipal Auditorium.

Today’s clue, the final one, is: “As I stare ahead at the gradually increasing water depth, to my left is the ape’s home.”

Previous clues:

1. “John Calhoun arrived and was the first to survey the land.”

2. “As the sun sets over the river, you must look to your right for the direction of the monkey.”

3. “With spring approaching and looking for fun, they will converge to visit and pass a good time under the moss draped cypress trees.”

4.  “A weary traveler you cannot be think there are many types of transportation.”  

5. “North you are if not begin again.”

6. “For below sea-level we reside but the monkey knows on one place he can climb and see water in front and behind him.”  

7.  “Cement, limestone, and trees abundant, what a slippery slope I see.”

The contest alludes to an urban legend. Filmmakers brought their equipment, actors and live monkeys to Morgan City in 1917 to film scenes for “Tarzan of the Jungle.” Filmmakers allegedly left several apes and monkeys behind when they refused to enter their cages after filming wrapped.
