SHRIMP AND PETROLEUM FESTIVAL – Aug. 30 – Sept. 3


Louisiana’s oldest state-chartered harvest festival, an homage to the offshore industries that power Morgan City, returns for its 77th year. It features live music, more than 100 crafts vendors, children’s events, a car show and a 5k run.

ROCKIN BOOGIE BLUES – Aug. 31 – Sept. 9

Lorna and Bernadette present “Rockin’ Boogie Blues,” a dinner and show at the Courtyard Marriott. The evening shows (Aug. 31, Sept. 1,6,7 and 8) begin with dinner at 7 p.m. and a show at 8 p.m. Matinees (Sept. 2 and 9) begin with lunch at 1 p.m. and the show at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $60.

LABOR DAY FISHING RODEO – Sept. 1 – Sept. 3

Nearly 30 eligible fish are spread out across three divisions, which determine the registration cost: Inside is $10, runabout is $15 and offshore is $25. Children 14 and younger can participate in the kids’ division for $2. Fishing begins at daybreak on Saturday, and the scales close at 1 p.m. on Labor Day.

100 BLACK MEN OF ST. MARY PARISH 5K FUN RUN – Sept. 1

The 100 Black Men of St. Mary Parish host an annual 5K fun run and walk. The first-place male and female receive $250 in cash, and trophies are awarded to the top male and female finishers in the following age categories: 13 and under, 14-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-54 and 55 and over. Proceeds go toward scholarships for seniors at each St. Mary Parish high school. ($25)

BAYOU LAFOURCHE ANTIQUES SHOW & SALE – Sept. 7-9

More than 45 dealers throughout the United States exhibit and sell rugs, furniture, glass, linens, jewelry, pottery, china, guns, books and more. The entry fee ($5 advance, $7 at the door) is good for all three days. The event is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

ART AFTER DARK – Sept. 8 FREE

Take a walking art tour past more than 40 artists at 25 venues along Main Street while the Houma-Terrebonne Community Stage Band performs.

PETIT TOUR DU TECHE – Sept. 8-9

Three weeks before the return of Tour du Teche, the inaugural youth spinoff embarks. Races are conducted over five divisions (5-7 years old, 8-10, 11-12, 1-4 and 15-17), with distances ranging from 250 yards to one mile. Registration costs $15 per paddler.

LOUISIANA DOLLS PAGEANT – Sept. 9

Large rhinestone crowns, wrap-around sashes, trophies, medallions and cash prizes are awarded. Age groups are 0-11 months, 12-23 months, 2-3 years, 4-6 years, 7-9 years, 10-12 years, 13-15 years, 16 years and up. Attire is “Sunday’s Best” or semi-formal. Entry fee costs $70, and siblings are an additional $35. Admission is $5 adults, $3 children.

HUNTER SAFETY COURSE – Sept. 15-16 FREE

The course covers hunter responsibility and ethics, firearms safety, survival, firearm handling skills, first aid and more. Participants must attend both days of class and pass a written and practical exam to be certified. Advance registration required. Saturday’s class is held at the Mathews Government Complex, and Sunday’s class moves to the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office Shooting Range in Raceland.

GOLDEN MEADOW FAMILY FISHING RODEO – Sept. 15-16

The family-oriented rodeo, which includes adults’ and children’s, freshwater and saltwater divisions, returns for its 21st year. A car, truck and motorbike show is held on Saturday, and live music is played on both days. Rodeo registration costs $25 for adults and $15 for children, and the other festivities are free to attend. The event is open from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS FAIS DO-DO – Sept. 15

Join the Fourth-Degree Knights of Columbus in Dulac for French, country and Cajun music and dancing. Larry White performs. The smoke- and alcohol-free event includes a $5 meal of ground meat spaghetti, rice, salad, bread, desert and one drink. Door prizes are given and 50-50 tickets cost $1 each. $2 entry fee. BATTLE ON THE BASIN – Sept. 21-23

“The Battle on the Basin,” the fifth race of the Evangeline Downs/Amelia Belle Casino circuit, features side-by-side drag boat racing in which racers reach speeds between 80 and 120 mph in a quarter-mile run. Tickets cost $10. Ice chest admission is an additional $10.

BAYOU RUNNERS DUATHLON – Sept. 22

Bayou Country Cyclists and the Bayou Runners Association host the third annual duathlon, which also features a 2-mile run and duathlon relay. The duathlon consists of a 2-mile run and 10-mile bike ride. Registration costs $35 for the duathlon, $60 per team for the relay and $25 for the 2-mile run.

BRITTANY’S PROJECT OPEN CAR SHOW – Sept. 22

The open car, truck, motorcycle and rat rod car show also features live music, arts and crafts, door prizes and a 50-50 drawing. At least 20 awards are given out, including Best of Show, Best Paint, Best Import and first-, second- and third-place designations for motorcycles. Pre-registration costs $20 and same-day registration costs $25.

THE PREVIEW OF CHAMPIONS – Sept. 22

The Vandebilt Regiment hosts The Preview of Champions, which is the season opener for the Louisiana Marching Band Circuit 2012 season.
