The winner is announced the night of the ball and the winning float receives a large ribbon to display on the float on parade day.

The parade begins at Highway 24 along Highway LA1 in Larose and ends at Cut Off Elementary School.

Krewe of Shaka Sunday, Jan. 27, 1:30 p.m. (Thibodaux)

The Krewe of Shaka celebrates its 18th year with its traditional winding route through Thibodaux.

The parade’s theme this year is “Shaka travel the Wonders of the World.” Thirty-five members on 16 ornamented floats of different community organizations deliver traditional throws and Shaka cups.

Four high school bands – Scottlandville, Lake Provident, Istrouma and Donaldsonville – provide music along the route.

Formed Jan. 18, 1995, the Krewe of Shaka aims to represent community togetherness and leadership.

Identities of the 2013 royal court and grand marshal are confidential until the krewe’s ball, scheduled for Jan. 25 at the Evergreen Cajun Center.
