(BPT) – As a loving parent, a thoughtful partner and a supportive friend, you play many roles in your daily life — all centered around the notion of caring. This includes caring for others, and just as importantly, caring for yourself. Particularly for adults age 40 and older, caring starts with the heart. Taking control of your heart health is critical to your overall wellness, so it’s important to understand the potential benefits of a daily low dose aspirin regimen.

Recently, there have been changes in recommendations about daily aspirin usage and it’s caused some confusion. It’s time to get the facts so you can take the next best steps for your health.

Important updates to understand for your heart health

The American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the American Heart Association (AHA) recently issued new guidelines central to the prevention of a heart attack or stroke.

Here’s what you should know from the guidelines:

  • For individuals who have previously suffered a heart attack or ischemic stroke, the guidelines continue to recommend daily, low dose aspirin to help prevent another cardiovascular event or stroke (referred to as secondary prevention).
  • Aspirin can continue to be used as a primary prevention measure for select individuals 40-70 years of age who have not experienced a cardiovascular event, but who have other risk factors that increase their chances of suffering an event.
  • The guidelines now provide more specific criteria for those ages 70+ and any consumer with an increased bleeding risk.
  • In all cases, it is critical that adults speak with their doctor before beginning or changing an existing aspirin regimen.

Foundation Consumer Healthcare (FCH), the maker of St. Joseph® 81 mg Low Dose Aspirin, stands behind the available evidence supporting the appropriate doctor-approved use of an aspirin regimen to help prevent heart attack or stroke. As America’s original low dose aspirin, St. Joseph has been producing quality products for over 125 years and remains committed to helping individuals “put a little love in their heart.”

What should you do next?

If you have previously suffered a heart attack, ischemic stroke or other cardiovascular event, a low dose aspirin regimen may help prevent another cardiovascular event. So, if your doctor has previously directed you to take a daily low dose aspirin, you should continue with this regimen.

Keep in mind, adults should always speak with their doctors before beginning, stopping or changing an existing aspirin regimen. As you’re thinking about your overall health plan, reach out to your physician or schedule a checkup to discuss your risk of future cardiovascular events and if a daily aspirin regimen may be beneficial for you. If it is, be sure to have your aspirin on hand or in your medicine cabinet. St. Joseph Low Dose Aspirin is available right off the shelf at all major retailers.
