The average person has either never heard of an aneurysm or assumes that it only occurs in the blood vessels in the brain. Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA n pronounced Triple A) is the most common aneurysm; it is unfortunate that victims who experience a rupture in the body’s largest blood vessel seldom live to talk about it. AAA is recognized as a silent killer and could best be described as a time bomb in the body. It ranks as the 13th leading causes of all U.S. deaths and the third leading cause of sudden death in American men.

Ironically, AAA surgeries prior to rupture carry about a 95 percent success rate.  Early detection is critical to survival.

Although ultrasound is a quick, simple, non-invasive and relatively accurate means for AAA detection, the dilemma in today’s world is that physicians do not typically prescribe ultrasound unless there are symptoms present because it will not be covered by most insurance plans.

Aneurysm Outreach Inc. (AOI) of Prairieville, La. is a unique, first-of-its-kind U.S. charity in the aortic aneurysm arena dedicated to mobilizing people and resources to eradicate aneurysms. In an effort to raise public awareness of the threat of undiagnosed aneurysms and save lives, AOI will partner with Cardiovascular Institute of the South (CIS) to provide FREE abdominal aortic aneurysm ultrasound screening appointments to those most at risk in Houma and surrounding areas on Saturday, Jan. 28, from 8 a.m. to approximately 1 p.m.

AAA screenings are offered on a once every five year basis to anyone over 60 and also to men and women over 55 who have a family history of AAA.  Men 65 to 75 who have ever smoked are especially encouraged to participate.  Participation requires a minimum eight-hour fast.

Space is limited. Those eligible must call 1-800-425-2565 (CIS) to schedule an appointment.
