Dear Editor,

Sunday, while you are praying in church, think of how you were given that opportunity to do so.

Monday, when you’re going to school or back to college, ask yourself if that opportunity was handed to you as a gift.

Is your job, that you are so fortunate to have, provided to you by another country? When you and your friends are using your freedom of speech, right to demonstrate, and so many more freedoms we are enjoying today in the greatest country in the world – was it all automatically handed to you? NO. We all know that freedom is not free. As long as we fight for our freedom, we will have veterans.

Everything we are enjoying today is because our veterans fought and died for it.

I’m Linton Doucet, president of the Veterans Memorial District, Ward 10, of Lafourche Parish. We, as a veterans’ district, are endorsing the veterans of Houma in their quest to get the people to vote “YES” on a half-millage tax for the veterans.

We once asked veterans to put their lives in harms way to keep us, and the whole world, free. Now these same veterans are asking for your help. This is a very small favor.

Remember that most of them were boys when they died. They gave us two lives: the one that they were living and the one that they would have lived. If you let your mind wander, you will notice that almost every family in Terrebonne has veteran blood in them.

So, on Nov. 2, help your veterans to achieve their goal in trying to get the people to vote “YES” in this half-millage proposition.

Linton Doucet,

(Korean veteran),
