Dear Editor,

This letter is my attempt to appeal to both your mind and heart as you examine the significant role you can play in preserving the great institution of Nicholls State University.

My plea is not for myself but rather for our unique region of Southeast Louisiana for which Nicholls has provided the gift of higher education for over 50 years.

Due to the low mobility rate of our region, many of our citizens would not have a college degree today had Nicholls not existed. Our community is rich with great teachers, nurses, and business professionals mentored, nurtured and produced by Nicholls State over the years.

Nicholls has a history of survival; we suffered the effects of hurricanes yet we rose above our needs to provide shelter to hundreds of refugees, we encountered the effects of the oil spill and drilling moratorium with a potential decrease in enrollment due to lack of funds from affected families, yet we sought additional financial support for our students and provided faculty researchers to assist BP with the aftermath of the spill.

We have peacefully managed several years of state budget slashing but now, it is Nicholls that needs the aid of someone else to help us move up and on.

We need you! We need you to help eliminate the cap on tuition and allow students to pay for every credit hour scheduled, allow for increased tuition for higher cost degree programs, create a minimum funding formula per full-time student equal to the regional average for similar Louisiana institutions, stop cutting higher education until all other state agencies have received equal reductions and resolve these funding issues in a special session.

Our students are our region’s intellectual property! Please help us preserve this valuable resource!

Debi Benoit,

Houma, La.
