Dear Editor,

As president of Nicholls State University, I am privileged to see a lot of great work performed by some very good people. It is always uplifting when true professionals come to the assistance of others without asking for recognition or for special favors. It is especially gratifying when they provide their services to make our lives easier and our work more pleasant.

I am pleased to thank Terrebonne Sheriff Vernon Bourgeois for all that he and his highly professional staff of deputy sheriffs do for Nicholls State University. Sheriff Bourgeois and his deputies have provided security and escort services to the Nicholls State University’s football coaches and players for several seasons. In so doing, they have shown our student athletes the value of service and the face of professionalism. At this fall’s annual football banquet, head football coach Charlie Stubbs praised these men and their dedication to Nicholls athletics, thus reinforcing my observations that they are special in their performance of duty “above and beyond the call.”

I also am grateful that Sheriff Bourgeois and his staff have provided labor services to Nicholls through their trustee work program. We take great pride in the appearance of the Nicholls campus, and the services that Sheriff Bourgeois generously provides helps to keep our campus neat and attractive. I want the public to know that we do not take any of this for granted.

In conclusion, it gives me a sense of real pleasure to say, “Thank you, Sheriff Bourgeois! Thank you, too, Terrebonne deputy sheriffs who have helped us over the past several years! We appreciate you, and we appreciate what you do for Nicholls State University, your university serving the Bayou Region.”

You do not need to go looking for a few good men: You have found them and you are THEY!

Stephen T. Hulbert,

President, Nicholls State
