Lafourche Parish President Archie Chiasson proclaimed April 2023 Autism Acceptance Month in Lafourche Parish. This proclamation emphasizes the need for public awareness to promote acceptance, celebrate the differences, and be more inclusive towards autistic individuals around us.

President Chiasson explained, “Autism is the result of a neurological disorder that affects the normal functioning of the human brain that can affect anyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender or socioeconomic background. More children are being diagnosed, resulting in rates as high as 1-in-66 children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the United States. Boys are four times more likely than girls to have ASD.”

Cut Off resident Kandice Degetyer accepted the proclamation and addressed the council with gratitude. “I have a 4 year old son in pre-K at Cut Off Elementary and am realizing how little Lafourche Parish knows about kids like my son, who cannot have a conversation like I’m having right now. He flaps, he twirls, he has the best life, but people just don’t understand how little resources we have in our community to accept and understand kids like my son, along with many other kids in our community. I want everyone to understand that it’s harder on parents like me, along with the children who try to accept that they’re different, along with trying to make friends, then it’s hard for the friends to understand that my friend is different. But, It’s ok because I love my friend anyway,” she explained.
