This October, moviegoers get to witness action-packed thrillers, a reimagined comic book villain, the return of some classic films and comedic horrors. Here are the movies premiering on the silver screen this month that are sure to bring excitement, heart-wrenching moments, laughs and a few screams.

This weekend (Oct. 4-6) opens with what is arguably the most anticipated movie of the month, “Joker” [R]. Joaquin Phoenix brings the infamous villain and title-character to life in this crime drama. Also starring Oscar winner Robert De Niro, the movie received mostly favorable reviews since its showings at film festivals earlier this year, even though it has received its fair share of controversy. The film has been described as “Oscar-worthy” and “polarizing” in the last few weeks. One thing is for sure: Although it is a comic book movie, it is not for children.

A movie likely to be overshadowed by “Joker”, the Natalie Portman-led “Lucy in the Sky” [R] also premieres this weekend. The film is loosely based on the real-life astronaut Lisa Nowak, who is perhaps best known for driving from Houston to Orlando, while allegedly wearing an adult diaper, to attack a woman who was dating someone she was involved with. Unfortunately, the movie would unlikely make a splash in theaters regardless of “Joker’s” release due to its bad reviews (a current 26 percent Rotten Tomatoes critics score) and poor promotional efforts.

The following weekend (Oct. 11-13), Will Smith brings his star power to the big screen in “Gemini Man” [PG-13], twice in one film. In this action-thriller, viewers get to watch Will Smith fight for his life against – Will Smith, albeit a younger, cloned Will Smith. There’s a plot somewhere in there, I’m sure. But who cares! There’s going to be explosives, and gunfights, and hand-to-hand combat, and car chases and Will Smith facing off against the Fresh Prince. What more do you need?

Another noteworthy moving arriving in theaters that weekend is “The Addams Family” [PG]. This animated comedy will center around America’s favorite spooky family. Oscar Isaac, Chloë Grace Moretz, Nick Kroll, Charlize Theron and Bette Midler lend their voices to make the family come alive.

Two highly anticipated sequels go head to head the next weekend (Oct. 18-20).

Ten years after the original film debuted, “Zombieland: Double Tap” [R] looks to return fans of the popular franchise to the theaters. With a budget of just over $23 million, “Zombieland” was somewhat of a surprise hit, bringing in approximately $102 million at the box office. It was before stars Jesse Eisenberg and Emma Stone really burst onto the Hollywood scene, too. Now Eisenberg and Stone return with Woody Harrelson and Abigail Breslin to kill a whole bunch of zombies.

Competing for market share that weekend is Disney’s “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” [PG]. Released five years ago, “Maleficent” made a huge impact at the movies, earning $758.5 million at the box office. In this year’s film, Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) and Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning) are forced into opposing sides of an impending war between the humans and fairies.

The last box office weekend (Oct. 25-27) in October ends with a bang when the fast-paced action-thriller “Black and Blue” [Not Yet Rated] arrives. Rookie New Orleans Police Department officer Alicia West, played by Naomie Harris, witnesses the murder of a drug dealer by her partner and other dirty cops, while wearing a body cam, in this thrill ride. Now, she must survive through the streets of New Orleans – while having a price on her head – to get the footage to the proper sources and expose the corruption.

These new releases aren’t the only movies to look forward to this October. A few classics are returning to select theaters – and only for a limited time, so click the links provided below to reserve your tickets, if interested.

To celebrate its 40th anniversary, Ridley Scott’s “Alien” [R] will be shown in theaters Oct. 13, Oct. 15 and Oct. 16. The original “Ghostbusters” [PG] will be in theaters on Oct. 6 and Oct.10 for its 35th anniversary. The Oscar-winning, animated feature film “Spirited Away” [PG] will return for three days, Oct. 27, Oct. 28 and Oct. 30.

From long-awaited sequels to potential new hits and the return beloved classics, October should be a great time at the movies.
