South Louisiana Veteran Outreach (SLVO) is hosting its Christmas at the Courthouse event on Sat., Dec. 19. The event will run from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM in the Houma Courthouse Square. SLVO is using the money raised during this event to sponsor veterans and their families during the holidays.

“So, what we’re doing is, we’re raising money to sponsor veteran families for Christmas. We’re taking the proceeds of this event and we’re putting all those proceeds towards buying Christmas presents for these families that are need of help during the holiday season,” SLVO President Brock Torbert said.

This year SLVO decided to host the Christmas at the Courthouse event in place of their gumbo cook-off fundraiser, which is normally held in November.

“We hope so. We would, of course, love to. Last year, we had a gumbo cook-off that was in November that kind of just carries over the funds and we used that to sponsor families for Christmas. This year we were unable to have the cook-off in November, so we decided to have this Christmas event just to raise some money and raise awareness for veterans in need,” Torbert said.

Admission for Christmas at the Courthouse is five dollars per person, but children can be admitted for free if a donation is made to SLVO’s toy drive. The event will include holiday activities such as stocking and ornament decoration and an ugly sweater contest, as well as appearances from Santa and Mrs. Clause. Attendees can also choose to “Adopt a Vet Tree”, as a way of directly benefiting veterans and their families during the holidays.
