TGMC celebrates National Donate Life Month

An Active Shooter Emergency Preparedness Drill was held in our area on April 16, 2019. The drill began at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center. The exercise was conducted to test response capabilities of the LDH Region 3 Healthcare Coalition and all emergency response agencies in the event of an emergency at a large-scale event within Region 3. The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) Region 3 Healthcare Coalition initiated this drill, along with the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness Region 3, and other emergency responders such as the Houma Police Department and the Sheriff’s Office and agencies within the Region.
In Houma, the drill specifically tested Terrebonne General Medical Center’s (TGMC) incident command system and the ability to triage and treat injured patients in the event there was an active shooter event. This situation called for patients to be treated and cared for at TGMC. Patients were transported by ambulance and on their own.
“In the event of an emergency situation such as this, we want to ensure that TGMC is effectively prepared to care for our patients,” said Phyllis Peoples, President and CEO. “This drill provided a realistic test of what to expect and we’re pleased to say that the positive outcome would not have been possible without the seamless collaboration from law enforcement, our physicians and staff,” she added.
As part of the emergency drill, mock victims were also transported to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center in Thibodaux.
“Thibodaux Regional has a detailed emergency preparedness plan that is activated during disasters,” said Thibodaux Regional Chief Executive Officer Greg Stock. “Hospital staff are well prepared and ready to act when an emergency situation arises and work to safeguard the safety of patients, visitors and staff.”
“As a leader, we work together with other agencies and eagerly participate in drills such as these to continuously seek opportunities to improve,” Stock continued. “These activities also help to enhance the working relationship and collaboration between the agencies and organizations involved.” •
