Twenty-four local teens are vying for Terrebonne Parish’s “Teenager of the Year.”

The competition culminates in a special dinner Saturday at the American Legion Post 31 home on Legion Avenue in Houma. The program begins at 6 p.m.

The annual contest, now in its 56th year, is sponsored by the American Legion Lenox Hotard Post No. 31, along with Post 272 Montegut and Post 380 Chauvin.

Nominees for the title hail from six parish high schools. The students are chosen based on their volunteer services during the 2012 year to their respective schools, churches and community. They also provide judges with a packet, which includes their academic record, resumes of service and achievements and letters of recommendation.

Each high school is allowed to nominate at least four students for recognition. The final selection is made by a committee of commanders and past commanders from the three Terrebonne Parish American Legion posts.
