The St. Mary Parish public school district is cutting its teaching staff by attrition in the coming school year.

The Associated Press is reporting that 35 teachers – 17 special education, six high school, eight junior high and four elementary instructors – are leaving the school district and their positions will not be refilled.

Federal funding cuts resulted in the loss of special education teachers.

School Superintendent Donald Aguillard reportedly told a school board budget workshop last week that additional cuts could impact areas such as tutoring, purchase of school books or extended school days.

Chief Financial Officer Alton Perry told the Associated Press the teacher cuts are based on attendance projections for the coming school year.
