A field of four candidates was narrowed to two Saturday when primary election results offered financial planner Harvey Chauvin and deputy assessor Loney Grabert an opportunity to compete in a runoff election for the parish assessor’s office.

Chauvin finished the primary bid in top position when 10,873 votes helped him carry 46.34 percent of the cast ballots. Grabert finished in the second position with 9,150 votes that represented 39 percent of the cast ballots.

The third position in the four-man primary went to financial consultant Clarence Williams with 2,282 votes for 3.73 percent of ballots, and real estate appraiser Scott Drapekin finished the race with 1,159 votes.

Prior to the primary, Chauvin said he would like to update the assessor office to include online access for taxpayers and a consolidation of mapping systems for all departments.

Chauvin also claimed that inequities have taken place in the assessors office.

Grabert, who has worked under the leadership of retiring long-time assessor Gen Bonvillian said he sees little need for any change in a program he contends has been working well for many years.

Voters will have the final say on Chauvin and Grabert during the runoff election on Nov. 19.
