The morning dew was still on the ground as our local officers began to trickle into Southdown Pavilion for Doug’s Service Company’s Back the Blue event on Wednesday, May 15. Companies had been set up since dawn, cooking a hearty breakfast of sausage, bacon, hash browns and more. The coffee was was hot and spirits were high.

The appreciation event was the brainchild of Doug’s Director of Operation, Dwight Anderson. Law enforcement officers and staff from the Houma Police Department, Terrebonne Sheriff’s Office, and Louisiana State Police were invited to stop by the all-day affair to enjoy a free meal as a small token of appreciation for all they do in the line of service.

“I traveled globally for the last 30 years, but I swore to myself when I returned home, I was going to do a Back the Blue event,” shared Anderson. “I joined Doug’s Service Company and knew we had to do this. I found out when National Law Enforcement Week is and started calling the different departments sharing my plan. I went to 10 different business owners that I knew-100 percent participation. Every one said yes. We did a little advertising and it just took off. I am humbled and flattered that this has come to be.”

“I appreciate not just Dwight, but everyone who has showed up to help,” said Col. Terry Daigre, Chief Criminal Deputy, Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office. “It means a lot to me and to everyone in law enforcement, especially nowadays with the increased level of violence towards police officers. Functions like this are big for both ends: it reminds us there are good people in the world, and the public get to see us and remember we are human. We are grateful to everyone who came together to put this on for us.”

Companies and individuals that participated with cooking teams and donated their time and more include: Coca-Cola, Downtown Jeaux Coffee Shop, Hunting Energy, K&B Industries, Vacherie Fuel, Gordon Dove, Cannata’s, Fakier Jewelers, Best Bakery, Bourgeois Smokehouse, Express Steel & Supply, C-Dive, Rouses Supermarket, Cortec, Whitetail Oilfield, Cajun Cutters, and Mrs. Judy Smart.

“We worked really hard to pull this off,” shared Christy Cortez, officer manager for Doug’s.“Dwight knew the people, and I know how to throw a party! I enjoyed doing this and it is for a great cause. We went out and asked for cooking teams and no one turned us down. That was just amazing.”

The appreciation event served breakfast, lunch and dinner. High vendor participation allowed for the invitation of spouses to join for lunch and dinner. Cortez estimates the event fed over 500 individuals.

Anderson and Cortez see this event growing in the future, to an annual event. They hope to grow to include events such as this one in all their service areas, including Lafourche and even New Orleans.

“They want to thank me, but it’s not what were here for,” smiled Anderson. “It’s to thank them and give them a chance to relax. It makes me smile to see our officers, all different departments just hanging out, drinking coffee, enjoying each other’s company.”
